Stability and compatibility test
219.00€ – 769.00€
Objective
Stability tests are conducted in order to ensure that the product meets the intended physical, chemical and microbiological standards when handled, transported and stored under normal and reasonably foreseeable conditions from the time when the product is manufactured until the end of its validity. By performing a stability test, we determine the minimum durability of the product and/or its period after opening (PAO). Product packaging can also affect the finished product stability, for example through leaching of substances of the packaging into the product formulation, through packaging barrier properties etc. Therefore, in addition to the stability of the product formulation, compatibility between the formulation and the primary packaging can also be checked during stability testing.

“I worked with CT Lab on a Consumer Product Safety Report (Safety Assessment) for two fragrance products to be sold within the European Union. The entire team was very patient, helpful, and professional throughout the entire process. The assessment was incredibly thorough and the turnaround time was faster than expected. Thanks to the whole team for their assistance!” Trevor (USA)

“I've had my cosmetics tested with a company for years. Waiting sometimes up to 6 months to be certified. So I came across Cosmetic Testing Lab on the Internet search. My safety assessment was ready within 3 days. I can't Thank them enough. Truly professional company, great prices and super quick turn around.” Neil (GB)

“Tadej and his team are very professional. They are very responsive and handle our inquires very efficiently. I highly recommend their service to any individual or business who needs advice on cosmetic regulation or lab testing for the EU market.” Anita (NZ)
Stability and compatibility test is required in the following countries:
Non-exhaustive list
Which products do or don’t require it?
Stability test is required for all cosmetic products without any exceptions. We should also point out that if anything changes in the product formula, packaging or manufacturing process, the stability and compatibility test needs to be done again to re-evaluate the product stability and its compatibility with the packaging.
Which legislations require it?
Stability and compatibility is required by the legislations of the following countries or groups of countries/regions (the list may not be exhaustive):
- European Union and EEA: consisting of the 27 EU member states as well as Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- Turkey
- Israel
- Serbia
- Gulf Cooperation Council countries: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman
- ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, Laos
- South Africa
- USA and Canada: safety of the product needs to be proven (not prescribed how), stability test may be one way of doing it
Testing procedure
As cosmetic products encompass a very diverse set of products, for which different sets of physical, chemical and microbiological specifications may be relevant, and as the stability and compatibility test should be carried out in “reasonably foreseeable storage conditions”, there are lots of different testing procedures available.
By exposing the product to various conditions such as various temperatures, humidity, UV light, mechanical stress, we can predict conditions, which a product may be subjected to during its shelf life and see if these conditions have a negative impact on the product’s quality and safety.
The main difference between testing procedures is whether we’re performing an accelerated or a real-time stability and compatibility test.
At accelerated stability test, which usually takes 3 months, the product is exposed to high temperatures of 40 or 45 degrees, which accelerate the product’s aging processes.

At the real-time stability test, which takes as long as the product’s claimed shelf life, the stability and compatibility is evaluated at the temperatures which the product will likely be exposed to during its shelf life, primarily at the room temperature. At both types of stability and compatibility test, the relevant physical, chemical and microbiological specifications are monitored at various inspection points during the length of the test.
Compatibility of the product with its packaging is determined by conducting the stability test in an inert packaging (e.g. glass containers) as well as in the final product packaging in which the product will be placed on the market. In case you use different packaging types, it is advisable to test the product in every type of packaging.
We offer various types of accelerated and real-time stability tests with standard protocols, which can also be modified to meet the specific requirements od the various product types, storage conditions or client specific requests.
Timeline
The timeline of the stability tests varies, primarily depending on whether you’re doing an accelerated or a real-time stability test.
- Accelerated stability tests normally take 3 months
- Real-time stability tests can take 2, 3 or even more years
