What is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
TSafety Data Sheet (SDS), formerly known as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document which provides detailed information about a substance or mixture related to health effects of exposure to the product, hazard evaluation related to the product’s handling, storage or use, the measure to protect workers who are at risk of exposure, and emergency procedures. SDS is therefore an important piece of document used primarily for the communication of hazards related to the substances or mixtures.
Which substances require the Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
SDS needs to be provided for substances where a substance or mixture meets the criteria for classification as hazardous in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, if the substance is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistant and very bioaccumulative (vPvB), and for the substances which are included in the so-called “candidate list” for authorization (list published on the ECHA website).
Even though it is not mandatory to prepare one for consumer products (including cosmetics), it is an industry practice and it is advisable to have an SDS prepared.

Which language should the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) be in?
SDS needs to be provided in an official language of the Member State(s), where the substance or mixture is placed on the market by the chemical manufacturer, the distributor or the importer.
What is included in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
The SDS format and content is strictly defined by global GHS-based regulations and it contains 16 standardized points:

SECTION 3: Composition/information on ingredients
SECTION 4: First aid measures
SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

SECTION 8: Exposure controls/personal protection
SECTION 9: Physical and chemical properties
SECTION 10: Stability and reactivity
SECTION 11: Toxicological information
SECTION 12: Ecological information
SECTION 13: Disposal considerations
SECTION 14: Transport information

The countries that have adopted GHS have to issue their own regulations or standards to implement GHS criteria and provisions. In Europe, the SDS needs to comply with the EU CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures and REACH Regulation 1907/2006
